The Body & Film

I was assigned a plot of land in Brooklyn, NY to research and developed a communal site with my classmates. We created a park that would host our individual architectural structures. We researched sun exposure, distances to public transit, noise pollution and much more in order to create different aspects of our combined site.

We continued the project individually to develop an architectural structure based on the idea of the body and film. I chose a movie scene from, “The Hateful Eight” by Quentin Tarantino , in order to see how the body interacted with space in the film. After choosing a movie scene, I modeled the space, mapped out the movement and tracked the direction of the characters vision over the span of one minute to create a, “Visual Intensity Map”. This map combines all of the visual overlaps of the characters to show the concentration of activity on the center of scene. Using this mapping, I created a program for an architectural space to be placed at a hypothetical communal site in Brooklyn, NY.

Combining Visual Overlaps

I created a program based on the overlapping visual intensity of the characters in the scene. Areas where there were a higher intensity became spaces of activity, lower intensity became spaces of privacy.
