Urban Backbone

In order to improve the food distribution experience in Hunts Point, we must acknowledge the issues residents face while humanizing the person behind the logistics, the trucker. 15,000 come in and out of the Hunts Point to disperse food across the New York City daily. I am proposing a streetscape intervention that clarifies a truck route to reduce trucker confusion and streamline truck congestion to one area of Hunts Point, while releasing the existing choke hold on the residential core and allowing the core to grow. Creating safe separation and reintegration zones for trucker and residents to live in harmony. Disrupting the existing grid in order to implement communal spaces in an industrialized area that is currently designated to food distributors and chop shops. I imagine a reactivation of the area by repurposing with accessible trucker parking, green space, restaurants, street vendors and composting areas for trucker produce waste.
